The capital of the KZN Province is Pietermaritzburg, and contributes 16% to the national GDP of South Africa.

At 4%, the agriculture sector has a relatively low direct contribution to the provincial GDP. However, KwaZulu-Natal produces almost 30% of national agricultural output and hence contributes significantly to food security in South Africa.
